TGL Week 4: Tiger Woods vs. Rory McIlroy: Historic Showdown Set for Tonight

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will meet in a historic showdown during TGL Week 4 on Monday, January 27, 2025, at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The match pits Woods’ Jupiter Links Golf Club against McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf in what promises to be a pivotal moment for the league’s inaugural season.

The prime-time event, scheduled from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM ET, marks Boston Common Golf’s TGL debut. Jupiter Links enters the match seeking redemption after a challenging 12-1 loss to Los Angeles Golf Club in Week 2, where Woods acknowledged his struggles, stating,

“Walking is not the issue. It’s my game that is not very good!”

Jupiter Links’ roster boasts impressive credentials with 89 combined PGA Tour wins. Woods leads the team alongside Tom Kim, who replaces Max Homa in the lineup, and Kevin Kisner.

Boston Common Golf, owned by Fenway Sports Group, counters with McIlroy, Adam Scott, and Keegan Bradley, bringing 75 professional victories to the competition.

The 15-hole course features nine holes of Triples alternate-shot format and six holes of Singles head-to-head play. Notable holes include the Flex (Par 4, 516 yards), offering three distinct tee options, and the new Sidewinder (Par 5, 571 yards), featuring a water-guarded green. Two other additions, Hatchet (Par 4, 448 yards) with its two-tiered fairway and Boomerang (Par 5, 582 yards) with a narrow fairway, complete the course updates.

The TGL format introduces innovative elements to professional golf. Teams compete for points on each hole, with ties resulting in zero points and no carryovers. The “Hammer” rule allows teams to double a hole’s point value, adding strategic depth to the competition. A 40-second shot clock maintains quick play, while each team receives four timeouts per match—two for Triples and two for Singles.

Singles matches will showcase three key head-to-head battles:

  • Tiger Woods vs. Rory McIlroy
  • Kevin Kisner vs. Adam Scott
  • Tom Kim vs. Keegan Bradley

The league’s early success is evident in its viewership numbers, with the first match drawing an average of 919,000 viewers on ESPN, surpassing some concurrent NBA games. The SoFi Center’s advanced technology, including a giant simulator screen and shape-shifting green, provides a unique viewing experience for fans.

Global broadcast coverage includes:

  • US: ESPN and ESPN+
  • UK: Sky Sports Golf and Sky Sports Main Event
  • Canada: Sportsnet and Sportsnet+
  • Australia: Fox Sports and Kayo Sports

While Boston Common Golf enters as favorites, given McIlroy’s recent form and their strong lineup, Jupiter Links’ determination to bounce back from their Week 2 defeat adds another layer of intrigue to this historic matchup. The outcome may hinge on how well each team adapts to the TGL’s unique format and handles the pressure of the shot clock.

Fans can expect an intense competition as these golfing titans clash in a format that emphasizes quick decision-making and strategic play. With both teams featuring major champions and experienced competitors, this Week 4 matchup promises to deliver high-stakes golf entertainment and potentially reshape the landscape of professional golf competition.
